An Alpine Ski World Cup event opened officially in Bansko on Friday with a ceremony which was attended by almost the whole population of the Bulgarian resort town.

Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, Tourism Minister Zaritsa Dinkova, Bansko Mayor Stoicho Banenski, Bulgarian Ski Federation President Tseko Minev, Bansko Ski Area Concessionaire Yulen AD Executive Director Maya Hristoskova and football legend Hristo Stoichkov were at the ceremony.

Describing the competition as the year's biggest sport event in Bulgaria, Iliev said: "A major competition like this cannot be entrusted just to anybody. The Bulgarian Ski Federation has shown that it is an excellent organizer. I hope to see you all up there by the ski trail tomorrow."

Minev noted that 2024 is the centenary of both the Bulgarian Ski Federation and the International Ski and Snowboard Federation. "We were among the first in winter sports. We were one of the first 10 countries to join the international federation," Minev said.
