site.btaSecurity Measures Tightened in Ankara

On Tuesday, two days after a suicide attack in the centre of the Turkish capital, security measures in the city continue to be extremely tight.

Heavily armed soldiers, policemen, gendarmes have been stationed around government offices, around various institutions, on key boulevards and intersections, as well as in front of squares, parks, around metro stations, in front of public transport stops. In many places there are armoured military vehicles, police cars, gendarmerie cars, as well as Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) vehicles.

The police are constantly carrying out identity checks in various areas of Ankara and especially around the Ministry of Interior and the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye. The attack on Sunday was carried out in front of the Interior Ministry buildings. Two police officers were injured in the attack.

The centre of the capital, a large part of which was blocked after the attack on Sunday, was already open on Monday morning. During peak hours in the morning and afternoon, the usual traffic jams occurred and the streets were full of people.

There is no panic among the residents and guests of the Turkish capital after the attack on Sunday. Local residents commented to BTA that this is probably mainly due to the fact that there were no victims in the attack (apart from the two attackers - one of whom blew himself up and the other was neutralized by the police).
