The centre-right New Democracy party won Sunday's snap parliamentary elections in Greece, receiving between 40% and 44%  of the votes, according to an exit poll commissioned by the main Greek television channels and announced immediately after the end of election day at 7 pm.

If the exit poll results are confirmed by the official results, it means that New Democracy will get about 158 seats in the 300-member parliament and will have an absolute majority, allowing it to form an independent government.

This was also the goal of its leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who won with more than 40% in the previous elections, which took place a little over a month ago, on May 21. However, then, the seats in Parliament were distributed according to the ordinary proportional electoral system, and New Democracy did not manage to achieve an absolute majority. Therefore, the party refused to try to form a government and called for new elections, this time held under the electoral system adopted under its rule, in which the first political force gets up to 50 additional parliamentary seats.
