"Bulgaria and Croatia, as responsible and active EU and NATO Member States, have an important role and responsibility for building security, stability and development of prosperity in our region," Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said here on Thursday at a joint news briefing with Croatian President Zoran Milanovic, who is paying an official visit to Bulgaria.

Radev said that the profound regional and global changes resulting from the war in Ukraine have shown that there is a need for sharp measures to strengthen security and stability in the region, to develop the energy sector and improve comprehensive connectivity - transport, energy, digital, and to deepen the integration processes in the Western Balkans. According to him, these processes require active political dialogue and cooperation.

He noted the importance of both countries making efforts for a green transition of their economies and energy sectors, but they also share the conviction that this green transition should be carried out smoothly, fairly and guarantee a bearable social cost for the citizens.

Radev said that Bulgaria and Croatia share the view that the transition to carbon neutrality cannot pass without the recognition of nuclear energy as an important and irreversible part of the new European act for a zero net emissions industry.

The two presidents agreed that accelerating the European integration process for the Western Balkans is a key factor for stability, security and prosperity in the region. They also discussed the prospects for deepening trade between the two countries, and potential for expanding cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture.

Earlier in the day, the Bulgarian head of State and his wife Desislava Radeva welcomed Milanovic and his wife Sanja Music Milanovic at an official ceremony in front of the President's Administration building.
