In the fourth quarter of 2022, there were 123,865 non-EU citizens ordered to leave an EU Member State, which is an 11% increase compared with the previous quarter, and 28,155 non-EU citizens were returned to another country, including other EU Member States, following an order to leave - a 9% increase compared with Q3 2022, Eurostat reported on Friday. Compared with the previous quarter, Bulgaria was the state that registered the highest relative increase in the number of people ordered to leave (+537%), jumping from 510 in Q3 2022 to 3,235.

In the second and first quarters of last year Bulgaria issued similar orders to 255 and 260 foreign nationals respectively. Thus, Bulgaria took first place among the EU Member States with the highest growth of exit orders in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter of last year, while the second highest increase was registered in Ireland with +186.2%.

Only 130 non-EU citizens were returned from Bulgaria during that period, relatively maintaining the number of 125 citizens returned in the previous quarter, compared to 130 citizens in the second quarter and 155 citizens in the first quarter of 2022.

The largest number orders to leave, 2,450, in the last quarter were issued to nationals of Asian countries, including those from Syria (1,290 people), Afghanistan (935 people), Morocco (635 people), Iraq (140 people), Turkiye (40 people), Palestine and Iran (25 people each), Russia (20 people), Algeria (20 people), Pakistan (15 people) Egypt and Libya (10 people each), Nigeria and Yemen (5 people each).

The highest number of citizens returned from Bulgaria was from from Iraq and Morocco with 15 people each. Ecuador, Afghanistan, Iran, Sri Lanka, and Egypt had 5 people returned each.
