Citizens protested on Saturday in multiple cities throughout the country, including Sofia, Burgas, Vratsa and Garbrovo, against violence and abuse. Most of the protesters focused specifically on violence against animals, many even brought their dogs along.

They argued that a lot of abusers start with animals, then move on to children, women, the elderly, the weaker social groups, and stressed that violence needs to be nipped in the bud by institutions.

Protesters criticized the lack of commitment on the part of law enforcement authorities. The general demands of the national protests are fair sentences for abusers, stricter enforcement of the Animal Protection Act and the Penal Code, a functioning zoo police, enforcement of laws at the municipal level.

The protest is organized at the national level for the second time after the case of abuse against Mecho the dog, which caused massive public outrage.
