Bulgaria needs an independent president who can set the direction and act as a check on those in power, presidential candidate Andrey Gurov said at a meeting with citizens in Razgrad. He noted that the presidency should not only oversee the actions of the executive branch but also propose solutions.

“Our goal is to have not only an independent but also a proactive presidency, one that does not simply sit on the other side with a veto in hand, but also puts forward solutions,” Gurov said.

On national security, he said that, if he were president, he would immediately begin consultations with NATO allies under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, including Romania and Turkiye. Gurov expressed support for Bulgaria’s participation in the Coalition of the Willing and NATO’s anti-drone initiative.

“If we do not talk about these dangers and bury our heads in the sand, they will not pass us by, just as Chernobyl did not pass us by,” he noted.

Gurov also commented on judicial reform, highlighting the need for changes to the prosecution service and mechanisms to oversee the Prosecutor General.
