Commenting on Friday's news of a diesel deal between the Presidents of the US and Russia, Progressive Bulgaria MP and Deputy Parliament Chair Ivan Angelov told Nova TV: “A lot is happening; one thing is said before noon, another in the afternoon, and what actually happens afterward is something else entirely.” According to him, Bulgaria’s best course of action is to wait and see what concrete steps are taken and then analyze the situation.
"I believe that any extreme position would be extremely counterproductive at this time. Both our foreign policy and Bulgaria’s stance as a whole clearly show that we must be careful in our statements and vigilant about everything that is happening." In his words, he would not go so far as to say that an act by one country is a gift.
US President Donald Trump on Friday stated that Russia had agreed to supply diesel fuel to the US and global markets to help lower prices - a move that drew sharp criticism from Ukraine, dpa reported. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to the shipments during a “highly successful discussion" over the phone.
According to Angelov, the conflict in Ukraine must ultimately be resolved through diplomatic channels. Asked how the diesel deal would affect the war in Ukraine, he said: “We are all suffering from the war and its consequences; this is reflected in fuel prices, commodity prices, and tensions between individual countries. Everyone wants peace; the implication is that the Bulgarian Parliament advocates for peace only if Ukraine capitulates - we have never said that," he underscored. According to him, the arguments of both sides must be taken into account; they must sit down at the negotiating table and resolve this war through diplomatic means, not with weapons.
