Fruit, Vegetable Wholesale Prices Show Mixed Movement in Bulgaria This Week

Wholesale prices of fruit, vegetables and staple foods in Bulgaria moved in both directions this week, according to the weekly analysis of the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets published here on Sunday.

The Wholesale Food Price Index, which tracks wholesale food prices in Bulgaria, rose by 0.52% to 2.324 points from 2.312 points a week earlier. The index's base level of 1.000 dates from 2005.

Among vegetables, lettuce recorded the largest increase, rising by 47.15% to EUR 0.98 per kg. Tomatoes increased by 16.99% to EUR 1.68 per kg. Red peppers rose by 6.16% to EUR 1.24 per kg, while green peppers fell by 5.41% to EUR 0.98 per kg.

Cabbage rose by 4.01% to EUR 0.57 per kg and cucumbers by 2.90% to EUR 1.63 per kg. Carrots fell by 10.29% to EUR 0.61 per kg, potatoes by 8.95% to EUR 0.57 per kg, courgettes by 6.32% to EUR 0.86 per kg, and onions by 5.82% to EUR 0.55 per kg.

Among fruit monitored by the Commission, peaches rose by 8.23% to EUR 1.42 per kg and apples by 5.73% to EUR 1.07 per kg. Lemons declined by 3.28% to EUR 1.59 per kg and grapes by 1.95% to EUR 1.31 per kg.

Cow's cheese increased by 1.05% to EUR 6.16 per kg, while Vitosha-type yellow cheese rose by 1.54% to EUR 9.50 per kg. Yoghurt with a fat content of 3% or more declined by 1.10% to EUR 0.72 per 400 g container, while fresh milk rose by 1.16% to EUR 1.22 per litre.

Butter fell by 1.80% to EUR 1.42 per 125 g pack. Frozen chicken rose by 0.11% to EUR 3.56 per kg, while wholesale prices for medium-sized eggs remained unchanged at EUR 0.19 each.

Among other staple foods, rice fell by 3.89% to EUR 1.58 per kg and lentils by 0.99% to EUR 2.01 per kg. Dry beans rose by 2.37% to EUR 2.16 per kg and sugar by 1.53% to EUR 0.93 per kg. Type 500 flour fell by 4.76% to EUR 0.64 per kg, while cooking oil declined by 6.15% to EUR 1.68 per litre.
