More than 20 stands offering language games, quizzes and presentations of European traditions will welcome visitors to the Language Fair marking the European Day of Languages on Saturday, the Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin Institute for Bulgarian Language at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences said.

The Language Fair will take place from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm in the City Garden in front of the Ivan Vazov National Theatre in Sofia. Visitors will be able to explore stands featuring language games, quizzes and riddles, as well as presentations of traditional foods and customs from across Europe.

They will also have the opportunity to learn short phrases and words in different languages and find out more about opportunities to study foreign languages in Bulgaria, the Institute said.

The event is co-organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation, the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), as well as consulates and embassies in Bulgaria.

In 2025, Sofia traditionally marked the European Day of Languages with a Language Fair, as the initiative was celebrated for the 25th consecutive year.

The European Day of Languages is an educational campaign promoting Europe’s linguistic and cultural diversity. It has been observed since 2001, which was designated the European Year of Languages at the initiative of the Council of Europe together with the European Union. The initiative encourages foreign-language learning at all ages and promotes interest in professions related to translation and linguistics, with the aim of fostering intercultural understanding.
