Two Bulgarian holidays - Unification Day, marked on September 6, and Independence Day, marked on September 22 - were commemorated at Bulgaria's Consulate General in Bitola on Friday.

A lively discussion followed a lecture titled "On Two September Dates in Bulgarian History: The connection with Macedonia" by the historian and diplomat Prof. Angel Dimitrov, Co-chair of the Joint Multidisciplinary Commission of Experts on Historical and Educational Issues between Bulgaria and North Macedonia.

"Traditionally, in September we remember the feat of our ancestors, who resolutely stood up even against the Great Powers," Bulgaria's Consul General in Bitola Petar Petrov said in his introduction.

Prof. Dimitrov said the two dates are interconnected and are part of the historical process of real maturation, separation and unification and of the efforts of the united young Bulgarian State to take its rightful and equal place among the European nations. He also spoke about the causes, preparation and implementation of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, about the complex situation in which Bulgaria developed after September 6, 1885, about the role of the Great Powers and Russia, and various other historical topics and their significance for the geographical region of Macedonia.
