Three films with Bulgarian participation: Nina Roza, Lust and The Dreamed Adventure, will be screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival, which takes place from October 1 to 11, the festival organisers announced on their website.
Nina Roza, starring Bulgarian director and actor Galin Stoev in the lead role, has been selected to represent Canada in the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards in 2027. The film was directed and written by Genevieve Dulude-De Celles and is a co-production between Canada, Italy, Belgium and Bulgaria. The Bulgarian producers are Nikolay Mutafchiev and Lubomira Piperova.
Nina Roza is not part of the Vancouver festival’s competition programme but will be screened in the Panorama section, which showcases some of the best and most notable achievements in world cinema from the past year.
In February, the drama won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlin International Film Festival. When the film was screened in Bulgaria in March, it also received the Audience Award at the Sofia International Film Festival.
Alongside Galin Stoev, the film features several other Bulgarian actors, including Michelle Tzontchev, Sofia Stanina, Ekaterina Stanina, Svetlana Yancheva, Elena Atanasova, Tsvetan Todorov, Emil Kotev, Maria-Radena Bozhkova, Stefania Kocheva, Dimitar Nikolov, Antonio Dimitrievski, Anastasia Koleva, Mart Lachev and Eva Shuminovska.
Lust, a feature film by director Ralitza Petrova, has also been selected for the Canadian festival, where it will have its North American premiere as part of the Vanguard programme. The section introduces Canadian audiences to a new wave of talented filmmakers and highlights the enormous creative potential and cinematic craftsmanship emerging around the world, according to the Vancouver festival website.
Lust stars Snejanka Mihaylova, Nikola Mutafov, Mihail Milchev and Alexis Atmadjov. Julian Atanassov is the film’s cinematographer. The film is a co-production between Bulgaria, Denmark and Sweden.
Ten years after winning the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival for her striking debut Godless, Ralitza Petrova returns with a profound and emotionally layered drama exploring the fine line between childhood trauma and emotional life and intimate relationships in adulthood, the Canadian festival organisers said.
The Bulgarian-German production The Dreamed Adventure, directed by Valeska Grisebach, is included in the prestigious Showcase selection. The programme presents some of the most remarkable, daring and award-winning films from contemporary world cinema.
The film had its world premiere in the official competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, where it achieved major success by winning the prestigious Jury Prize. Following Cannes, the film was selected for the festivals in Toronto, New York and Karlovy Vary.
The Dreamed Adventure was filmed in the Svilengrad area with an entirely Bulgarian cast of non-professional actors. It follows an archaeologist who becomes entangled in the dangerous web of a local borderland mafia. The film is an international co-production between Germany, Bulgaria, France and Austria. Grisebach also wrote the screenplay.
The cast includes Yana Radeva, Syuleyman Letifov, Stoicho Kostadinov, Nikolay Shekerdjiev, Denislava Yordanova and Tiana Georgieva.
