GERB will take part in political contests where it should come first, party leader Boyko Borissov said on Sunday during GERB’s National Assembly.
"GERB is not an Olympic organization. It is not an Olympic committee where we take part simply for the sake of participating. We will take part where we should come first," Borissov said.
Borissov thanked participants and instructors in the party academy involved in training new members. He said they include civil engineers, lawyers, doctors, teachers and school principals. He said GERB would continue training and preparing new cadres through the end of the year, with sessions planned in Veliko Tarnovo, Pazardzhik, Kardzhali, Ruse, Silistra, Dobrich, Gabrovo and Sevlievo.
According to Borissov, youth brings boldness and courage, while experience can help younger politicians avoid mistakes and make new faces stronger in the years ahead. The aim, he said, is to present society with a "positive change of guard" involving new people who are not burdened by the past.
Regarding the upcoming presidential elections, Borissov said GERB sees Iliana Iotova as a strong candidate. He said Iotova had "outgrown the rest of the political class" and had managed to attract support for her candidacy. According to him, her candidacy could become a major political issue in the forthcoming campaign.
Borissov also commented on Bulgaria’s accession to Schengen and the euro area, as well as its entry into the Banking Union, saying Schengen and eurozone membership had been priority goals for GERB.
He said the political situation had forced GERB to enter coalitions with ideological opponents. "I created GERB to fight the Bulgarian Socialist Party. And then we entered a coalition with left-wing parties. But that came after a series of elections," he said.
