Grigor Dimitrov, Bulgaria’s top-ranked tennis player, is the first US Open qualifier after Otto Virtanen withdrew from Q3. The two were to meet on the court later on Thursday, in the final, third round of qualifying, but the Finn withdrew due to physical problems, allowing the Bulgarian to advance without taking to the court.

Dimitrov, who is currently ranked 137th in the world, recorded two wins in qualifying against Italy’s Lorenzo Giustino on Tuesday and Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov on Wednesday.

Dimitrov is a former world number three who reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 2019. Injuries forced him to drop outside the top 100 in 2026 for the first time since 2012. Dimitrov was not awarded a US Open wildcard and was forced to play in qualifying for the second time in his career.
