Two aeroplanes and two helicopters took part in extinguishing a fire near Kavala, northern Greece, on Tuesday, Greek media reported. The fire broke out at around 11 a.m. local time in an area with low, dry vegetation. In addition to the aerial efforts, ground crews comprising a total of 34 firefighters were involved in the operation.

There are no reports of any casualties. At this stage, the fire no longer has an active front. Standby crews will remain on site to prevent the fire from reigniting, the daily Ta Nea reported.

The local news website kavalanews.gr reported that the fire started in a car which caught fire spontaneously in one of the coastal car parks. The fire subsequently spread to the surrounding dry vegetation.

The Kavala Port Authority has imposed emergency restrictions in the wider coastal area to ensure the safe refuelling of fire-fighting aircraft with seawater.
