site.btaAuthorities Neutralize Powerful GPS Signal Jammer in Sofia

The State Agency for National Security (SANS), jointly with the Communications Regulation Commission and the Sofia Directorate of the Interior, located and neutralized a powerful jammer in the capital's Dragalevtsi borough, the SANS press centre said on Friday.

The device, found in a heavily guarded residential complex, was suppressing GPS signal frequencies across Sofia, including at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, affecting aircraft flying over the city and television towers.

Operations at Sofia Airport have not been affected by the powerful GPS signal jammer, and flights are operating on schedule, the airport’s press office told BTA. 

According to Kelari restaurant manager Nikolay Ivanov, no jamming device has been found so far. There is an increased police presence around the restaurant.

Ivanov said police arrived at around 4 pm to inspect the premises and search for a jamming device, but nothing has been found so far. "We have cooperated with the law enforcement authorities," he added.

Another restaurant representative, Angel Yordanov, also spoke to the media, saying that the establishment remains open and is fully booked for this evening. According to him, there is no reason for people to be concerned.

The two representatives also said that they had so far experienced no problems with their own mobile phone connections or those of their customers.
