During a press conference here on Friday, Plovdiv Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov, Deputy Mayor Plamen Panov and architect Dimitar Baldzhiev reported that Plovdiv Municipality will hold an open international architectural competition for a conceptual design to reconstruct and revitalize the Trimontium pedestrian underpass and surrounding urban area.

Dimitrov emphasized that the underpass is a key gateway to the eastern and southern parts of the Ancient Forum of Philippopolis, where archaeological remains are already exposed. A preliminary study by Baldzhiev found that, despite heavy daily pedestrian traffic, the space is unattractive, poorly maintained and lacks accessibility for people with disabilities.

The competition seeks an integrated concept focused on universal accessibility, preservation and integration of archaeological structures, and high-quality architecture and landscaping. Plans also include the construction of a tourist information centre. The goal is to transform the underpass from a transit space into an attractive hub for culture, recreation, social interaction and tourism.

Multidisciplinary teams may participate in the competition, provided they include at least one fully licensed architect. Projects can be submitted by October 21. Winners will be announced November 9, and an exhibition will take place in December. Prizes are EUR 15,000 for first place, EUR 8,000 for second and EUR 5,000 for third.
