site.btaGERB Leader: Let Us Not Turn Eurovision into Another Reason for Division

In a video posted on Facebook on Friday, GERB leader Boyko Borissov urged that the Eurovision Song Contest not be turned into yet another reason for division. He was commenting on the reactions to Burgas getting selected over Sofia to host Eurovision in May 2027.

“First of all, congratulations to [Eurovision 2026 winner] Dara, because it is thanks to her magnificent performance that Eurovision is coming to Bulgaria,” he said. 

“Let us not divide ourselves over good things, and certainly not in such an ugly way. There is no need for us to prove once again who is better than the other. What matters is that Bulgaria is hosting Eurovision,” Borissov underscored.

He congratulated Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov (GERB) and his team. “Burgas has deservedly won as of today, thanks to its hospitals, children's hospital, the huge arena we [GERB] built. It is a cozy, beautiful, green and well-organized city, with modern infrastructure, a huge tourism base throughout the region and a proven track record of hosting major festivals and events, a modern airport and the cleanest sea in all of Europe,” Borissov said.

The GERB leader added that, as prime minister, he had never divided cities and had worked equally for all of them. He therefore advised Nikolov to invite the mayors of the other cities which competed to host Eurovision - Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna - to join the organizing committee, so that the contest could become an event for the whole of Bulgaria.

“The goal for all of us should be the same – a beautiful and large-scale presentation of our country and a spectacular show for Eurovision fans,” Borissov stressed. He said this was an opportunity to once again show Europe Bulgaria's rich image.

Borissov also said that Friday's opening of the new Georgi Asparuhov Stadium metro station of Sofia's underground railway was another reason to celebrate. “We are fulfilling yet another promise to the people of Sofia and all our friends who support Levski – the entire Metro station will be in blue, and everyone will be able to travel to the matches on the most modern metro in Europe,” Borissov said.
