An electric mobility ramp has been installed at North Beach in Burgas to help people with limited mobility reach the sea more independently, Burgas Municipality said on Tuesday.
A second ramp will be installed at Kraimorie Beach, while the initiative also provides 20 lightweight specialized beach wheelchairs for easier movement across the sand.
Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov said the city is starting with two platforms and 20 wheelchairs, adding that the technology could also be made available to other municipalities. The selected ramps were chosen for their durability in coastal weather conditions.
The installations come as new beach accessibility requirements took effect in Bulgaria on January 1, 2026, requiring accessible routes from beach entrances to the sea and suitable equipment for people with mobility impairments.
The ramps, designed for people with mobility impairments, are part of the “Supporting the Blue and Smart Transformation of the Black Sea Basin” project. The project is funded by the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme 2021–2027, with Burgas Municipality partnering with municipalities in Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine.
