Pencho Slaveykov's influence on the Yambol modernist movement of the 1920s and on the circle around art historian Kiril Krastev was the focus of a discussion at the BTA National Press Club in Yambol on Monday marking the 160th anniversary of the poet's birth and Bulgarian modernism.
Literary scholar and critic Yordan Eftimov, who moderated the event, said modernism remains insufficiently understood in Bulgaria and highlighted Slaveykov, literary critic Krastyo Krastev and Kiril Krastev as key figures in its development.
Regional Library Director Hristina Nacheva said the library's oldest edition of a Slaveykov work is the 1901 edition of Narodni Lyubovni Pesni (Folk Love Songs). The library holds 103 titles by or about the poet, including works reflecting his role as a translator and editor.
Journalist and writer Maria Kachuleva described Slaveykov as a spiritual inspiration for Yambol's young avant-garde writers of the 1920s. She also traced the development of the city's modernist circle around Kiril Krastev and recalled the creation of Yellow Hall, a meeting place for local artists and intellectuals.
State Archives-Yambol Director Svetlana Bachvarova highlighted the city's contribution to Bulgarian modernism through documents related to Kiril Krastev, including rare editions of the magazine Crescendo and the futurist-inspired Manifesto of the Society for Struggle Against Poets. She also drew attention to the legacy of Yambol-born writer, critic and journalist Strashimir Krinchev.
Art historian Stoyka Tsingova of the Georgi Papazov Art Gallery said Kiril Krastev's work as an art historian, critic and essayist continues to support the work of researchers and remains an important part of the gallery's legacy.
The discussion was part of BTA's nationwide initiative "Pencho Slaveykov Today", organized in all 33 of the agency's national press clubs. The December issue of BTA's LIK magazine will be dedicated to Slaveykov and the 160th anniversary of his birth.
