Bulgaria has recorded a significant increase in road fatalities for the first time in three years, demonstrating the need for the executive and legislative branches to take swift and adequate measures to reduce traffic accidents, Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) MP Kalin Stoyanov said at a briefing in Parliament on Thursday.
Stoyanov noted that amendments to the Road Traffic Act and the Penal Code concerning traffic offences had been proposed in 2025, but many of them were not adopted.
MRF Deputy Floor Leader Halil Letifov recalled the May 31 incident in Ruse (on the Danube) in which a child was injured in an accident involving an electric scooter.
"We proposed a complete ban on electric scooters. Since June 4, this bill has not been considered," Letifov said, adding that the current regulations adopted by Parliament have failed to produce results, as neither age restrictions nor speed limits are being observed.
"The most reasonable solution is our proposal for a total ban on electric scooters in order to prevent serious accidents. We insist that these legislative amendments be adopted or at least debated," he added.
MRF Deputy Floor Leader Hamid Hamid said the party expects the authorities to take an appropriate approach to the issue and adopt urgent measures.
"We will continue to propose amendments to all legislation related to road safety prevention and will support adequate proposals submitted by the Council of Ministers," Hamid said.
