A film about the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS) was screened during the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia, IMI-BAS said on Tuesday.

Short films selected and produced by ICM TV, the congress’s official television channel, were screened throughout the event programme. ICM TV chose 27 leading mathematical centres from around the world to be featured at the congress and commissioned films presenting their work.

The ICMS film features Leonardo Cavenaghi, Higinio Serrano and Emine Yildirim, members of the centre’s three research groups, who discuss their experience and the professional development opportunities available to them in Bulgaria. IMI-BAS said the film presents both the vision of the centre’s leadership and its research environment.

It also features ICMS Director Julian Revalski, who helped conceive and establish the centre, Prof. Ludmil Katzarkov, Fields medallist and ICMS Advisory Board member Maxim Kontsevich, and Prof. Milen Yakimov.

This year’s ICM drew more than 3,000 participants to Philadelphia, while many more followed online. BAS said screening the film before such a large audience offered an opportunity to present the centre’s activities and achievements to scientists, researchers and specialists worldwide.

The Academy added that ICMS had helped make Bulgaria an attractive centre for world-class mathematical research and had established itself on the international scientific scene. It has involved dozens of leading scientists in its activities, while 20 mathematicians from around the world, at various stages of their careers, now work there permanently.
