The Mathematics Days in Sofia conference has provided an opportunity to deepen joint research between Bulgarian mathematicians based in Bulgaria and abroad, and has helped strengthen the ties between them, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) full member Julian Revalski, chair of the conference's programme committee, said at the opening ceremony in BAS on Monday.
The ceremony was attended by numerous scientists and experts in the field of mathematics from various countries, as well as representatives of state institutions, including President Iliana Iotova.
"The conference was conceived and established as an event to bring together mathematicians not only from Bulgaria, but also from the now sizeable Bulgarian mathematical diaspora around the world, together with their colleagues and partners, to exchange ideas across all areas of the mathematical sciences," Revalski said.
He noted that the conference had also contributed to the establishment of the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the BAS in 2019, where around 20 researchers from all over the world are currently working. He also announced that this year the institute's award for outstanding achievements in the mathematical sciences will be presented for the fifth time.
