Sofia University Vice Rector Sonia Mileva addressed the two-day international seminar Connecting EU here on Monday, emphasizing the growing importance of natural intelligence and critical thinking. "We live in a dynamic environment that increasingly demands natural intelligence and critical thinking," she said. The event, mottoed "In Defence of European Values: The Power of Civil Society," was organized by the European Economic and Social Committee in partnership with the Economic and Social Council.
Universities have always played an active role in democratic processes, Mileva said. She described the university not only as a place for education and research but also as a space where people actively contribute to dialogue on identity, the defence of democratic values, academic freedom, and rights.
"We have always sought to be - and have always been - part of the most important sociopolitical and socioeconomic developments of our time," Elena Kalfova, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at Sofia University.
The Faculty of Philosophy sees its mission as extending beyond excellence in teaching and research to educating socially engaged, critically minded individuals who are prepared to make an active contribution to civic life. She said the faculty aims to equip students to participate in open debate, express diverse opinions, and engage in dialogue with institutions, civil society organizations, and social partners.
