Serbia's ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has called on President Aleksandar Vucic to head its list in the next parliamentary elections and stand as its candidate for prime minister, Radio Belgrade reported on Thursday.
"We would like him to lead our list and for us to enter these elections together. If our list wins the elections, if that is the decision of Serbia's citizens, we see him as our candidate for prime minister," SNS President Milos Vucevic said.
Vucevic's statement comes after Vucic announced at an SNS rally on June 27 that he would resign as president within the next few weeks.
Vucevic added that the SNS would also nominate "a worthy candidate" for the Serbian presidency following Vucic's departure, saying that the nominee should be "someone who can win the election".
"Whether that person is a party member, an independent figure, a man or a woman, I cannot tell you... None of us has the right to let vanity or personal ambition stand in the way of the path that leads us to victory," Vucevic said.
