A marine geology project was presented by Raina Hristova of the Varna Institute of Oceanology under the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences during a Bulgarian-Romanian Symposium on Scientific Research in Antarctica, held in Constanta, Romania, on Wednesday.
Hristova said she had long dreamed of visiting Antarctica and that the dream had come true. She took part in the 31st and 32nd Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions.
At the symposium, Hristova presented a project on the integrated study of sediments, biota and waters within the ocean ecosystem of the littoral zone around the Bulgarian Antarctic base on Livingston Island. The research covers 2023 and 2024.
Studying Antarctica using cosmogenic methods is key to understanding the Earth's climate system, its changes and Antarctica's role in climate regulation, Hristova told the symposium, which is reviewing the findings of the last two Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions.
The forum was opened by Bulgarian Antarctic Institute Chairman Professor Hristo Pimpirev together with Tudor Prisecaru, Vice-Chairman of the Antarctic Research Commission at the Romanian Academy.
Bulgaria's Ambassador to Romania, Radko Vlaykov, attended the event as a special guest and addressed the participating scientists.
