Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, GERB Chair Boyko Borissov said that from a top performer in the financial sector, Bulgaria is now facing actual infringement proceedings.

The leader of GERB stated that his party was doing what was necessary, which turned Bulgaria into an example of financial discipline. He added: "More than 60 billion were disbursed, and Bulgaria was Europe's top performer with over 99.8% of EU funds absorbed; yet now, unfortunately, we've been subject to an infringement procedure as early as the first month."

Borissov said that when GERB was in the same situation that Progressive Bulgaria is in right now, GERB took steps to "tighten the belt" in the first year, eliminate the deficits, and bring the country into surplus. He stated that this was accomplished during the world's most severe financial and economic crisis. He added: "When countries were going bankrupt, I didn't let anything falter in Bulgaria, and through EU funds I managed to compensate and keep the country moving forward."
