Czech energy group Energo-Pro has commissioned its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Bulgaria, built in Gorna Oryahovitsa (Northern Bulgaria), the company said on Friday. The project marks an important step in the development of a modern and sustainable electricity infrastructure and will contribute to the more efficient management and balancing of the power system, the press release added.

The facility is the first of its kind for the ENERGO-PRO Group in Bulgaria. It was built by Energo-Pro Bulgaria and will be operated by Energo-Pro Energy Services.

The system's main function is to store electricity during periods of surplus in the grid and feed it back into the system during periods of higher demand or supply shortages. In practice, the energy storage facility will be charged from the electricity distribution network during periods of the day when electricity prices are lower and discharged during hours when prices are higher. In this way, it will support the balancing of the power system, improve its reliability and security, and contribute to the more efficient use of available energy resources.

The investment amounts to EUR 4.23 million and was implemented with co-financing under the Low Carbon Economy Programme of Bulgaria's National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The facility has an installed capacity of 10.75 MW and a storage capacity of 24.31 MWh.

The battery's expected operational lifespan is 10 years or more than 7,000 charge-discharge cycles.
