A Red Code extreme weather alert for dangerously high temperatures has been issued for Saturday, June 27, throughout Serbia, where an even more intense heat wave is beginning and is expected to continue into the beginning of next week, with temperatures ranging from 35 C to 39 C. The official warning was issued on Friday by the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia.
An orange alert for dangerous temperatures was issued for Friday in most regions (Backa, Banat, Srem, Western Serbia, Sumadija, Pomoravlje, Eastern and Southeastern Serbia), while a yellow alert was issued for the remaining areas, according to local media. Maximum temperatures for the day reached between 32 C and 36 C.
Authorities issued warnings of an extreme risk of wildfires due to the severe drought.
Exercising increased caution and following medical advice due to the high temperatures and high UV index readings has been recommended.
The high temperatures that have hit Serbia in recent days have led to a sharp increase in the number of emergency room visits, and doctors were particularly concerned about the case of a 17-year-old boy who suffered a heart attack, presumably due to heatstroke, and is currently being treated at the Belgrade Emergency Clinical Centre, state broadcaster RTS reports.
The heat wave is seriously straining the healthcare system, with emergency teams responding to over 300 calls in the past 24 hours.
Experts warn that high temperatures pose additional risks, especially for people with cardiovascular diseases.
