site.btaGreece Allocates EUR 15 Mln for Water Supply Management Projects on Nine Islands

Greece will allocate more than EUR 15 million to finance 10 projects aimed at improving water supply and addressing water shortages in nine island municipalities, the newspaper Kathimerini reported.

The decision to include the municipalities in the national water management programme was signed by Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou. Funding will be allocated to the islands of Naxos, Skopelos, Amorgos, Astypalaia, Rhodes, Leros, Alonissos, Zakynthos and Crete.

The projects include the repair and modernization of aging water supply networks to reduce water losses, as well as the construction of new distribution networks.

The programme also provides for the construction of new seawater desalination plants and related infrastructure to ensure adequate water supplies in areas facing shortages, Kathimerini said.

In mid-June, authorities declared a state of emergency over water shortages on the Aegean islands of Tinos and Alonissos. Karpathos was later added to the list.
