Residents of Romania's Tulcea County received an alert from the RO-ALERT system, after new Russian drone attacks in Ukraine near the Romanian border.

An IAR 330 Puma helicopter of the Romanian Air Force took off at 3:57 a.m. local time and monitored aerial targets 31 km east of Sulina, the Romanian Defence Ministry said. The air alert ended at 4:23 a.m.

The ministry said it had kept allied structures informed in real time and remained in constant contact with them.

Romania, an EU and NATO member, shares a 650 km land border with Ukraine. Since Russia began attacking Ukrainian ports on the Danube River, drones have repeatedly violated Romanian airspace.

In late May, a Russian drone struck a residential building in Galati. Romania subsequently declared the Russian consul in Constanta persona non grata. In response, Moscow announced on Thursday that it was expelling Romania's Consul General in St Petersburg and closing the country's consulate there.
