The Bulgarian citizen arrested in Greece on suspicion of espionage with a drone has been released until the start of the court proceedings, the online newspaper Kathimerini reported on Monday.

The 35-year-old Bulgarian suspect was detained in Thessaloniki on Saturday after a report to the authorities that he was operating a drone. Following this, the police established that the individual did not have the necessary authorization to do so.

During an inspection of the drone, it was found to contain thermal imagery of a former military camp, the publication notes.

The suspect has denied the allegations, stating that he was testing a recently purchased drone and was unaware that he was near a former military site. Regarding the thermal image, he explained that it was accidentally captured.

The Bulgarian citizen said he had been living and working in Thessaloniki for years, Kathimerini reported. The man was released from custody on the condition that he regularly reports to a police station and does not leave the country, the article reads.
