The Sofia Regional Prosecution Office has charged and detained a Belgian citizen for stabbing another man in the abdomen outside a swimming pool in Sofia, the prosecution service said on Wednesday. The suspect has been detained for up to 72 hours.

The evidence gathered so far indicates that on June 1, at around 3pm, outside a swimming pool in Sofia, the Belgian stabbed another man in the abdomen, causing him a medium bodily injury involving penetration of the abdominal cavity.

Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case for an offence punishable by up to six years' imprisonment.

The prosecution service is expected to file a request with the court seeking to place the suspect in pre-trial detention.
