Speaking here on Sunday, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said that "today we feel how the legacy of Saints Cyril and Methodius continues to live within us — in the way we think, speak, and connect with one another." He took part in a ceremony marking the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Education and Culture, and of Slav Letters. 

“The alphabet represents far more than a writing system. It has given us a way to preserve our memory, organize our thoughts, and share them with the world,” Terziev said, describing May 24 as “the brightest Bulgarian holiday.”

Terziev noted that learning to read opens an entirely new world for every child, while the courage to ask questions marks the beginning of true knowledge — the kind that extends beyond textbooks and inspires dreams. 

“Today, nearly 300 million people around the world write using our alphabet. They use it to share their dreams, seek understanding, express love, and pass on knowledge. That is both a tremendous responsibility and a source of genuine pride, because the Cyrillic alphabet is not only part of our history, but also a living connection between people, cultures, and generations,” the Mayor said.

He added that while the Bulgarian language continues to evolve, it remains “the surest way to express who we are.” “If there is one thing we must pass on, it is our attitude toward words — to use them thoughtfully, with care, kindness, love, and respect for others,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Terziev joined a ceremonial procession in Sofia marking May 24.
