Georgi Kandev, the Interior Ministry's Acting Secretary General, said in a Facebook post on Friday evening: "The noose tightened. The handcuffs snapped shut. The fugitive known as 'the prosecutor's son' has just been captured by the General Directorate Combating Organized Crime (GDCOC)."

"I told you last month we were working on this case," Kandev said.

Later in the day, the prosecution service said Vasil Mihaylov is to be transferred to prison to serve a 20-month sentence. The prosecution service said it would take all necessary action in the remaining proceedings against him, including one in which the Sofia Regional Court has handed down a four-year prison sentence, as well as in pre-trial proceedings conducted against him.

On March 27, caretaker interior minister Emil Dechev said it was believed that Vasil Mihaylov, the son of Pernik-based prosecutor Biser Mihaylov, together with two other individuals, all of them masked, went by car to the village of Lyulin. There, they allegedly attacked with clubs a GDCOC officer, who had previously served in the Criminal Police unit in the western town of Pernik.

In April 2025, the man known as "the prosecutor's son" was sentenced by the Sofia Regional Court to four years in prison over several assaults and a death threat.
