The National Protection Service (NPS) withdrew MRF Chair Delyan Peevski’s security detail, his party’s press service said on Wednesday. The decision followed a review by the specialized commission under Article 23 of the National Protection Service Act, requested by Peevski in December.
“I believe in the competence of State bodies and in their expertise, and in their responsibility when making decisions,” Peevski said.
“This sends one propaganda talking point of Continue the Change (CC) and Democratic Bulgaria (DB) into the rubbish bin. That is good news,” Peevski said.
On the first day of the new National Assembly, CC tabled a bill amending the National Protection Service Act that would restrict the range of people eligible for NPS protection by removing existing grounds for automatically granting it to MPs and other people, including GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Peevski at present. DB submitted a similar bill to the National Assembly registry. It also proposed withdrawing the security details of Borissov and Peevski.
Peevski’s NPS security detail became a matter of political controversy in 2025. In October, Parliament rejected proposals by Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria MPs Ivaylo Mirchev and Bozhidar Bozhanov that MPs should be guarded by the NPS only in specific threat cases and that NPS protection for Peevski should be withdrawn. In December, MRF-New Beginning said four NPS officers and sergeants had been assigned to protect Peevski, adding that the vehicle he uses is party-owned and has been made available to the NPS for temporary free use. Mirchev disputed the party’s account and argued that Peevski’s security detail should be removed, while Peevski later said he would ask Parliament’s Internal Security and Public Order Committee to assess whether he needs such protection.
