Sofia will mark Europe Day on May 9 with a series of events including an EU flag-raising ceremony at the presidency, a cycling parade inspired by the Giro d’Italia, an “European Village” near the National Palace of Culture, performances of the European anthem “Ode to Joy,” youth activities, debates and an evening concert.

President Iliana Iotova, Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, diplomats, EU representatives and citizens are expected to take part. The celebrations will also include cultural performances, children’s dances, information stands about the European Union, and concerts by young Bulgarian performers.

Organizers noted that this year marks the 76th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundations of today’s European Union.
