Almost 72% of Romanians would support unification with the Republic of Moldova, and 63.4% believe that it would make Romania a stronger country, according to the latest survey by the INSCOP sociological agency, published online on Friday.
The survey was conducted among 1,100 respondents aged 18 and over through telephone interviews between April 14 and 21. The sample has a maximum margin of error of 3% at a confidence level of 95%.
According to the released data, 71.9% of respondents would vote "yes" in a referendum on the unification of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, 21.4% would vote "against", another 2.1% have not yet decided, 3.2% would not vote, and 1.4% do not know or do not answer.
Only 8.4% of Romanians believe that the unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania will be achieved in the next three years, 13.3% think it will happen in the next five years, and 29.3% see it happening in the next ten years or more. According to 34.7%, it will never happen, 13% do not know, and 0.6% did not answer.
Almost 71% of the survey participants tend to agree with the statement that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are Romanians with the same language and ethnicity as Romanians, while 25.5% believe that they are a separate people with a different language and their own destiny. Nearly 4% do not know or do not answer.
"The topic of the unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania seems to have gone beyond historical nostalgia and has become a widely accepted reference point for identity in Romanian society. For most Romanians, relations with the Republic of Moldova are no longer perceived strictly in diplomatic or geopolitical terms, but as relations between communities considered part of the same cultural and historical space. On the other hand, the data (from the new INSCOP survey) also show the presence of a clearly expressed realism: Romanians support the idea of unification, but do not believe that it can happen quickly," said INSCOP Research director Remus Stefuriac regarding the latest poll by the sociological agency.
