The fourth edition in Bulgaria and third in Burgas of the First Lego League Challenge robotics festival opened at the Burgas Congress Center on Saturday. The event is part of the world’s largest educational robotics initiative, which takes place in over 110 countries with millions of participants.
Nearly 800 participants are taking part in this year’s festival in the seaside city, including over 40 Bulgarian teams and participants from Romania, Croatia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Burgas Deputy Mayor for Education Mihail Nenov welcomed the participants on behalf of Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov. Nenov said: "Applause for your mentors, who helped you develop your innovative projects and create the robots that will compete today and tomorrow." He also praised the participants for having the boldness to experiment, to invent and dream.
Deputy Minister of Education and Science Natalia Mihalevska also spoke at the opening, saying: "This is a celebration of imagination, creativity, and knowledge. In fact, you are the very reason for our efforts in education."
Maya Staykova, head of the Research and Project Activities Department at the National STEM Center, delivered a welcome address on behalf of the organization's director, Nayden Shivarov.
This year's theme is Unearthed and is dedicated to archaeology and the study of cultural heritage. Participants develop innovative projects, program and test robots, and work on real-world case studies in various STEM fields. The teams whose projects are top rated will earn the right to participate in the international finals in Greece.
Alongside the competitions, the two-day programme includes an exhibition of Lego models, demonstrations, and accompanying events. Visitors can view the projects and watch practice matches on Saturday and official robot battles on Sunday. The festival features a forum titled Archaeology, Technology, Future as well as screenings of documentaries dedicated to underwater archaeology and the marine environment.
Admission to the festival is free. The event is organized by the Center for Creative Training, the Future Inventors Foundation, and the Municipality of Burgas.
