AES Bulgaria stated on Friday in a press release that it is compelled to proceed with a controlled and safe shutdown of the plant and place it in conservation mode, which will be maintained by a limited number of employees due to the expiration of the long-term power purchase agreement between TPP AES Galabovo and the National Electricity Company (NEK). This is the responsible approach to protecting the plant and preserving future opportunities for its operation, according to the statement regarding the official information received of mass layoffs at the power plant, reported by labour offices in the region on Thursday.
Future employment at the power plant will naturally depend on its evolving operations, the company states, adding it has been transparent with the staff regarding the ongoing conservation process, treating those affected by the changes with respect.
AES Bulgaria adds that it has informed Mini Maritsa-East in a timely manner, as its contract for the supply of lignite coal for electricity generation is set to expire at the same time.
In the statement, the company further notes that it is in constant dialogue with the Bulgarian authorities and relevant stakeholders to explore existing development opportunities that would allow AES Galabovo Thermal Power Plant to continue supporting Bulgaria’s energy security and the reliability of the grid.
The statement adds that the changes do not in any way affect the Saint Nikola Wind Farm in Kavarna, which is part of the investor’s portfolio.
