Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council Prosecutors Chamber unanimously decided on Wednesday to designate Deputy Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova acting prosecutor general. The decision comes in the wake of Borislav Sarafov's resignation as acting prosecutor general earlier today.
The Prosecutors Chamber took notice of a letter by which Sarafov withdrew his consent to perform the functions of a prosecutor general.
Vanya Stefanova served as investigating magistrate at the Sofia District Prosecution Service (June 1997 - June 2001), after which she was prosecutor at the Slivnitsa Regional Prosecution Office and deputy regional prosecutor of Slivnitsa. In April 2010, she was appointed prosecutor at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Between September 2013 and March 2015 she was Deputy Chair of the State Agency for National Security. She then returned to the Sofia City Prosecution Office, and in 2019 she joined the Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office. In January 2025, the SJC Prosecutors Chamber elected her deputy prosecutor general.
