In 2025, the average annual total income per person in a household stood at BGN 14,403 (EUR 7,364.14), an increase of 12% compared to 2024. Over the past ten years (2016–2025), total household income per person has increased 2.8 times, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on Friday.

Last year, Bulgarian households spent an average of BGN 12,661 (EUR 6,473.47) per person, which is 8.1% more compared to 2024. Over the 2016–2025 period, household expenditures increased 2.7 times. On an annual basis, income growth outpaced expenditure growth by 3.9 percentage points.

Real household income increased by 9.7% in 2025 compared to 2024, and the real income index for 2025 compared to 2016 stands at 181.4%. In the structure of total income, wages have the largest share. In 2025, they accounted for 57.2%, which is 2.2 percentage points higher than in 2024 and 2.9 percentage points higher than in 2016.

The share of consumer spending in total household expenditures decreased from 82.6% in 2016 to 80.4% in 2025.

Income and expenditures in 2024

NSI data shows that in 2024 the average annual total income per person was BGN 12,857 (EUR 6,573.68), an increase of 18.5% compared to 2023, and 2.6 times higher over the 2015–2024 period.

In 2024, Bulgarian households spent an average of BGN 11,712 (EUR 5,988.25) per person, which was 16.6% more compared to 2023. Over the 2015–2024 period, household expenditures increased 2.5 times.

Household consumption

In 2025, there are changes in the consumption of basic food products and beverages per person in a household compared to 2024. Consumption of bread and pasta products decreased by 1.8 kg, and that of potatoes by 0.1 kg. The largest increases were recorded in the consumption of soft drinks by 9.4 litres, alcoholic beverages by 1.7 litres, vegetables, and meat by 0.6 kg each.

In 2024, Bulgarians reduced their consumption of bread and pasta products by 3.4 kg and potatoes by 0.3 kg. The largest increases were in the consumption of soft drinks - by 11.1 litres, fruit -by 5.8 kg, and meat - by 2.3 kg.
