A statement by members of the Yes, Bulgaria party, released on Monday, comments on recent political developments in Hungary, arguing that the country is undergoing a historic turning point and a shift away from what they describe as a “captured state” model.

The statement claims that Hungary’s governance system under Viktor Orban has led to weakened institutions, including the judiciary, security services, and media, and has concentrated power and resources within a narrow circle. It argues that this model has contributed to lower living standards and poor economic performance, including weak purchasing power and growth within the EU.

Party co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov says that a similar but milder version of this model has existed in Bulgaria, alleging increased institutional capture and misuse of public funds, while pointing to public protests as rejection of such governance.

The other co-chair, Ivaylo Mirchev, states that the Hungarian election result signals a return toward a pro-European direction and reduces Hungary’s role as a blocking force within the EU. He argues that this could shift the balance in EU and NATO decision-making.

The statement concludes by reaffirming the party’s position that Bulgaria should pursue a “strong Bulgaria in a strong Europe” and calls for clearer political positioning from other Bulgarian leaders on issues related to institutional integrity and relations with Russia.
