The Tisza party led by Peter Magyar has won Hungary's parliamentary elections with a decisive lead over Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz party, according to near-final results.
With 97.35% of protocols processed, Tisza secures 138 seats in the 199-member parliament and 53.65% of the proportional vote. Fidesz is projected to win 55 seats with 37.76%, while the Our Homeland Movement enters parliament with six seats and 5.9%.
The result gives Tisza a two-thirds constitutional majority, enabling it to amend laws and the constitution, and potentially reverse key policies introduced by Orban's government, as well as work towards unlocking frozen EU funds.
The election was widely seen as one of the most competitive in Hungary in years, marking the strongest challenge to Orban's rule since 2010.
The vote was closely watched across the European Union as a potential turning point for Hungary's political direction and relations with Brussels. A new government is expected to be formed in the coming weeks after final confirmation of results.
