Bulgartransgaz EAD, Bulgaria's state-owned gas system operator, will secure the natural gas needed for the technological operation of Bulgaria’s gas transmission system through a tender procedure for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the company announced. This will be the first time the operator has used such a mechanism to cover its technological needs.
For the period from July 2026 through September 2027, the company plans to purchase a total of 1.5 million megawatt-hours of LNG.
The deliveries are expected to be carried out through the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, in which Bulgartransgaz holds an ownership stake.
Only companies with proven experience in LNG deliveries will be allowed to participate, subject to prior approval by the platform operator. Applicants will also be required to guarantee that the gas originates from countries not subject to international sanctions.
Bulgartransgaz CEO Vladimir Malinov said that the procedure is intended to ensure the reliable supply of the system’s technological needs with full transparency and in line with European market principles.
“Supplies of LNG from reliable partners such as the United States and other countries are a key element in achieving diversification and strengthening energy security both for Bulgaria and for the region,” Malinov said.
