Chiprovtsi Municipality will hold the Festival of the Chiprovtsi Carpet from May 1 to 3, Chiprovtsi Mayor Plamen Petkov said on Wednesday.

The programme will include a show of authentic Chiprovtsi carpets from the past several centuries and demonstrations of how a Chiprovtsi carpet is woven. Lectures and academic discussions on the Chiprovtsi carpet are also planned, along with sales of carpets and souvenirs featuring Chiprovtsi carpet motifs in outdoor tents, concerts by well-known performers and local folklore groups and brass bands, an open-air children's drawing contest, a children's race for the Chiprovtsi Municipality Cup, a documentary exhibition, an international chess tournament and more.

Petkov added that the Chiprovtsi carpet “is not just a craft, it is our coat of arms before the world, our memory and our pride. This year we have prepared a programme that will honour tradition but also bring joy to young and old alike. With it, we will show that Chiprovtsi is a living, welcoming town that stays true to its roots,” Petkov said.
