Greece's Government Council for Foreign and Defence Affairs has approved the purchase of an air defense system and the modernization of F-16 fighter jets, Defence Minister Nikolaos Dendias said, as quoted by the Kathimerini online daily.
Greece is already in negotiations with Israel for the supply of a significant portion of the missile systems for its new defense shield – the Achilles Shield project.
"The Council also approved the modernization of four MEKO 200 frigates and an agreement for the maintenance of C-27J Spartan military transport aircraft," Dendias said. The decision also includes the continuation of infrastructure development for F-35 aircraft, with the first delivery expected in 2028.
According to information from Greece's public broadcaster ERT, the modernization programmes will include 25% participation by the Greek defence industry.
