The town's feast day was commemorated in Veliko Tarnovo on Sunday with a solemn liturgy by Bishop Matey of Nikopol in the Holy Forty Martyrs Church.
Matey recalled that the temple is dedicated to the victory of Ivan Asen II at the Battle of Klokotnitsa in 1230. The bishop called for love and Christian faith in these difficult times for all and recalled the feat of the holy 40 martyrs.
After the liturgy, the guests of the holiday laid flowers at the grave of Tsar Kaloyan. Among the official guests were National Assembly Speaker Raya Nazaryan, BTA General Director Kiril Valchev, Veliko Tarnovo Mayor Daniel Panov, Municipal Council Chair Ventsislav Spirdonov, Veliko Tarnovo Regional Governor Valentin Mihaylov, Vasil Levski National University Rector Brigadier General Stancho Kaikov.
The holiday continued with a solemn procession from Tsarevets Fortress to the Mother Bulgaria Monument in the town centre, which was attended amongst others by MEP Christian Vigenin, Constitutional Judge Atanas Semov, Continue the Change leader Assen Vassilev, BSP leader Krum Zarkov and Progressive Bulgaria leader Rumen Radev. On the open stage, Mayor Daniel Panov greeted the residents of Veliko Tarnovo and the guests of the town, after which the festive programme began. They included the Tsarevgrad Tarnov – Sound and Light show, the Tsarevets Youth Festival and a performance of the Bulgare folk dance ensemble. The Regional History Museum also organized free guided tours.
