President Iliana Iotova visited Kyustendil for the city’s official holiday, the Kyustendil Spring Festival, on Saturday. She was welcomed by Mayor Ognyan Atanasov outside the Kyustendil Municipality building and greeted residents and visitors during the celebration in Velbazhd Square.
President Iotova wished the people of Kyustendil days filled with success at the start of spring, and success that would be a shared achievement, on the city’s festive day.
“When we face difficulties and challenges, we Bulgarians must stand hand in hand, because there is no problem that cannot be overcome. Only when we are together, when we are united, can we move forward and leave our children the Bulgaria we want,” Iotova said.
The head of State thanked Kyustendil Mayor Ognyan Atanasov for the invitation to attend what she described as the most beautiful celebration at the beginning of spring.
“Through your work, you make it possible for all Bulgarians to reap the fruits and take pride in them, proud to be Bulgarian. This spring becomes the most important and emblematic symbol of Kyustendil,” she added.
This anniversary edition of the Kyustendil Spring Festival is dedicated to young people and children, our future. “The future is complex, but we all want it to be beautiful and successful for our children. For us adults, it is a source of hope and a ray of light in the anxious times in which we live,” she said.
“Just as our parents bequeathed us peace and the opportunity to develop our talents, let us leave an even richer future to our children. Let this be our pledge to them today, on this wonderful holiday, because they deserve it,” Iotova said.
According to the municipal administration, the holiday combines cult practices of the Thracians and the Romans and their reverence for solar deities and healers, enriched by medieval Christian traditions. These include interpretations of the legend of the Forty Holy Martyrs and the sanctuary dedicated to them on Hisarlaka hill above the city. A symbol of spring is the three young women chosen in a contest held on March 14 on the stage in Velbazhd Square in Kyustendil. A prayer service for the health and prosperity of the city’s residents and visitors was held as part of the celebration.
