site.btaTraffic, Road Conditions Can Be Monitored via Toll Administration System
Traffic on Bulgaria’s national road network and the latest weather conditions across the country can be monitored in real time, the Ministry of Regional Development reported on Friday. The data is updated every 15 minutes via the toll system’s cameras. The new features are available on the National Toll Administration’s website (www.bgtoll.bg). They were presented by the caretaker Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Nikolay Naydenov, and the director of the National Toll Administration, Oleg Asenov, during the international forum Future Cities Bulgaria 2026, which took place in Sofia.
Naydenov reported that 15 years ago, Bulgaria began the process of publishing open data from government agencies. "Following the opening of cadastral data two years ago, the toll system is now becoming a key provider of spatial data, particularly for dynamic processes such as road traffic and meteorological characteristics—wind, air and pavement temperature, humidity, wind speed, cloud cover, risk of black ice, and other risks," he added.
Assenov said that users will have access to a real-time traffic analysis system, allowing them to see at any time how many cars are travelling in a given direction. This way, anyone travelling will be able to see the volume of traffic and, if it is very heavy, choose an alternative route.
The system already provides real-time weather information from 80 weather stations attached to toll cameras across the country. This way, drivers will be able to check the current weather conditions at their destination. “The data will also be helpful to road maintenance companies, as it will provide information on asphalt temperature via special sensors. When certain thresholds are reached, they are required to take measures against icing,” said Asenov.
